President/CEO
As President/CEO of the largest electric cooperative in Oregon state, Robert Echenrode has worked to strategically position Umatilla Electric Cooperative (UEC) as an economic keystone, supporting growth for our communities.
Robert assumed the lead role at UEC in March 2016 after joining the cooperative as engineering manager in 2013. In April of 2024, Robert was awarded the Northwest Public Power Association’s (NWPPA) Excellence in Engineering or Operations Award. The distinguished award honors a utility employee that has made a significant contribution to the industry as a whole.
Prior to his tenure at UEC, Robert served at three other rural electric cooperatives, honing his skills, and gaining invaluable insights into the industry. He holds a Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering from Ohio State University, laying the foundation for his technical proficiency, and further fortified his knowledge with an MBA from Oklahoma State University.
Under Robert's leadership, UEC has experienced remarkable growth. The utility serves over 11,000 members in northeastern Oregon, from Boardman to the Blue Mountains. Since assuming the role of President/CEO, the cooperative has expanded significantly, growing from roughly 80 employees in 2016 to over 120 by 2023. Revenues saw expansive growth as well, increasing by five times during Robert’s tenure.
Robert’s leadership has been vital in ensuring that UEC remains steadfast in its mission to provide reliable and innovative energy solutions. Businesses reliant on UEC power supported over 23,000 jobs and generated more $1.25 billion in labor income, with UEC itself generating a payroll of more than $20 million annually, according to a 2020 economic report.
In a concerted effort to facilitate community growth and prosperity, UEC annually allocates grants, rebates, and energy efficiency loans exceeding $2 million to its members. Over the past year, the cooperative returned $12 million to its membership through its Capital Credits program.
During his tenure, UEC's members have made transformative investments, including multiple billion-dollar expansions benefiting the region's irrigation, food processing, technology, and renewable energy sectors. Robert's strategic vision and tireless dedication have propelled UEC to new heights, cementing its position as a catalyst for economic growth in the region.
