Washington, D.C. Youth Tour

UEC Entry Guidelines & Applications

The tour is open to qualified high school juniors attending school in Umatilla, Morrow or Union Counties, whose parent or guardian is a current member of Umatilla Electric Cooperative (UEC). UEC will pay all of the expenses involved with the trip except for spending money that the finalist may want to take.

  1. Completed applications and parental consent form are required to be postmarked or received at UEC. Deadline for submission in January 10, 2017.
  2. Applicants are requested to include a photo of themselves with their completed application for use in marketing materials.
  3. Applicants are required to write a creative essay, 300-500 words on (one) of the following topics:
    • Research the not-for-profit, cooperative business model and the investor-owned corporation. Write an essay that discusses the advantages and disadvantages of the two. Consider the pros and the cons as they apply to both the business organization and the customers of the business.
    • Washington, D.C. Youth Tour students have an opportunity to visit with their Congressman. As a member of an electric coop, write an essay about the concerns and questions you would discuss with your Congressman. Explain why these are important to you.
    • As a young adult in the 2016 presidential election year please tell us your thoughts and ideas on what you would change in the election process or campaigning for future election years.
  4.  Essays will be judged by a committee chosen by Umatilla Electric. Semi-finalists will be notified regarding the selection process for two finalists and two alternates.
  5. The selected students will represent Umatilla Electric Cooperative and will join other Oregon delegates for a trip to Washington, D.C. The NRECA Youth Tour will be held from June 8-15, 2017.
  6. The selected students agree that if selected, he/she will attend UEC’s 2018 Annual Meeting and will provide a short report to the UEC Board of Directors explaining the overall experience of the trip.
