Umatilla Electric Cooperative takes pride in supporting its members as they invest in energy-saving improvements. One recent success story comes from Boardman Foods, which significantly enhanced its
manufacturing efficiencies while reducing energy consumption.

Through a strategic partnership with the Bonneville Power Administration, Umatilla Electric worked alongside Boardman Foods in Boardman, Oregon, to help maximize energy savings and lower operational costs. The results are impressive—an estimated annual savings of over 800,000 kWh, which is equivalent to powering more than 650 average Umatilla Electric residential homes for a month.

Beyond the financial benefits, these upgrades contribute to a more sustainable future, reinforcing the cooperative’s commitment to its members and the environment.

The SAGE Center, also in Boardman, recently replaced over 380 lights in its exhibit hall with a more energy-efficient system. The estimated savings are over 41,000 kWh, the equivalent to powering over 35 residential homes for a month.

These projects exemplify the power of collaboration between Umatilla Electric, its members, and the BPA Energy Smart Industrial program. Working together, these entities turned technical upgrades into a success story for economic and environmental sustainability.

Jackie Caldera, Umatilla Electric’s energy efficiency specialist, said she appreciates working on projects like this that create meaningful impact.

“Each day, I have the privilege of working with amazing individuals and building meaningful relationships,” Caldera said. “I learn something new every day and contribute to a purpose greater than myself, which is incredibly fulfilling. I am grateful for the challenges that push me to grow; the connections that make my work rewarding; and, above all, the opportunity to help our members.”

UEC remains committed to supporting initiatives like these, reinforcing its mission to empower communities with smart energy solutions.
