Umatilla Electric Cooperative (UEC) extends its heartfelt gratitude to Good Shepherd Health Care System for more than a decade of partnership in bringing local news to northeast Oregon. As of January 1, Good Shepherd Health Care System (GSHCS) has acquired UEC’s majority share in Northeast Oregon Now and will take the lead in continuing to provide free, regional news to the community.
Launched in 2013, Northeast Oregon Now is an online news platform dedicated to providing timely, accurate, and community-focused journalism to Hermiston and surrounding areas. Founded through a partnership between UEC and GSHCS, the website serves as a resource for residents seeking updates on local government, business, schools, public safety, and community events.
Known for its free access and hyper-local focus, Northeast Oregon Now has become a trusted source of news in the region. The platform’s mission is to inform and connect the community by delivering high-quality reporting and relevant stories that matter most to its readers.
Under the continued leadership of editor Michael Kane, Northeast Oregon Now remains committed to serving the region with integrity and dedication, ensuring that local voices are heard, and community stories are told.
“For more than a decade, this partnership has delivered reliable local news to our region,” said UEC General Manager/CEO Robert Echenrode. “As we transition out of our majority role, we’re grateful to Good Shepherd for their dedication to this platform and look forward to supporting their continued efforts to serve Northeast Oregon with quality, community-focused news.”
UEC also acknowledges the dedication and leadership of Northeast Oregon Now editor Michael Kane, who has been at the helm of the project since its inception. Kane’s tireless commitment to delivering community-driven journalism has been instrumental in the platform’s success, and he will continue in his role as the sole employee of Northeast Oregon Now under Good Shepherd’s stewardship.
“As the partnership evolves, it’s reassuring to know that the foundation of this project remains in trusted hands,” added Echenrode. “Michael Kane’s contributions have shaped Northeast Oregon Now, and we are confident in his ability to carry its mission forward.”
Good Shepherd’s acquisition marks an exciting new chapter for Northeast Oregon Now, ensuring its continued role as a free and reliable source of local news for the community. UEC remains committed to supporting the project in new ways while sharing a collective vision of fostering community connections and access to information.
