Umatilla Electric Cooperative (UEC) hosted its 89th Annual Meeting, bringing together more than 500 members for an evening centered on a Legacy of Liberty. This year’s event held special significance as it recognized the 250th birthday of the United States and the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, attacks, honoring the enduring spirit of freedom and service that defines the nation.

The evening opened with a warm welcome from Board Chair Bryan Wolfe, who greeted members and set the tone for the event. Following his remarks, Lisa Jones delivered a moving performance of the National Anthem after a heartfelt recognition of local veterans.

Throughout the meeting, UEC paid tribute to individuals whose contributions embody the cooperative’s commitment to community and service. Special recognition was given to the legacy of Glenn Rohde and Martha Orozco, both of whom recently passed. Their dedication and impact were honored with deep appreciation and respect.

During the official business meeting, attendees heard the results of the Board election: with T.J. Hansell elected in District 5 (Wheatland, Buttercreek, Pilot Rock); incumbents Steve Platt in District 6 (East District); and Johnny Otis in District 7 (Hermiston).

Members also viewed a video presentation from UEC’s vice presidents, highlighting the cooperative’s ongoing commitment to serving its membership and preserving a strong Legacy of Liberty for future generations.

Also, during the event, UEC leadership answered questions submitted by members throughout the evening that were addressed live by UEC’s leadership, providing insights into cooperative operations, priorities, and future initiatives while reinforcing UEC’s commitment to meeting its members’ needs.

A highlight of the evening was a keynote address from Robert Darling, Lt. Colonel, United States Marine Corps (Ret.). Drawing on his experience in the White House Military Office on September 11, 2001, Darling shared powerful insights into crisis leadership at the highest level of government. His firsthand account of coordinating between national leaders during one of the country’s most critical moments was both inspiring and enlightening, culminating in a standing ovation from attendees.

In addition to the program, members enjoyed a festive red, white, and blue atmosphere and participated in prize giveaways, with 30 door prizes awarded throughout the evening, including a grand prize getaway to Sunriver Resort. Each member household also received an American flag blanket from The Shops at Mount Vernon, along with two American flag lapel pins as commemorative gifts. To close the event, Lt. Col. Darling met with attendees and signed copies of his book.

UEC’s 89th Annual Meeting was a meaningful and memorable celebration of community, service, and the enduring values that define the cooperative and the nation it serves. Thank you to all who attended, and we look forward to celebrating 90 years with our membership next year.
