As the season of Thanksgiving begins, it’s easy to overlook one of life’s modern wonders — something we depend on every day but seldom stop to appreciate. Electric service.

Robert Echenrode

Every time we turn on a light, charge a phone, or sit down to a warm meal, we’re tapping into one of the greatest human achievements — the ability to harness energy and turn it into power that fuels nearly every part of our lives. It’s so common, so reliable, that it often fades into the background of daily life. But when you stop to consider what it takes to make that moment possible, it’s truly remarkable.

Electricity doesn’t just happen. It begins at generation sources — hydroelectric dams, wind turbines, natural gas plants, and other facilities that convert natural resources into usable energy. From there, power travels through high voltage transmission lines spanning hundreds of miles, carried and coordinated across a vast regional grid. Finally, it reaches your neighborhood through the local distribution system maintained by your cooperative — Umatilla Electric.

Every part of that process relies on skilled people, sophisticated equipment, and careful planning. One small issue anywhere along that chain can ripple across the system, which is why reliability doesn’t happen by chance. It happens through constant vigilance and investment.

At UEC, we’re proud of what we’ve built together. Our members count on electricity to power their homes, businesses, and farms — and we take that responsibility seriously. This year, our system delivered a 99.99% reliability rate, meaning our members experienced just minutes of unplanned outages, on average, over the course of an entire year. That’s a statistic that reflects the dedication of ever person behind the scenes — from engineers monitoring system performance to line workers braving the elements to restore power safely and quickly.

We’ve invested in technology that helps us detect and isolate outages faster, as well as in vegetation management and system upgrades that prevent problems before they start. These efforts aren’t always visible, but they make a difference — especially during storms or high winds when the grid is under stress.

This November, as we take time to reflect on what we’re thankful for, I want to express my deep gratitude to our members for their trust and support. Your partnership allows us to continue improving reliability, embracing innovation, and preparing for the future of energy together.

Electricity is more than just a service — it’s the foundation of modern life. It brings us security through warmth, light, and connection. And at UEC, we never take that for granted.

From all of us at your cooperative family, thank you for allowing us to power your lives. We wish you a safe and happy Thanksgiving season.
