This summer, Umatilla Electric Cooperative welcomed several interns across various departments to gain firsthand experience in the electric utility industry while developing professional skills and exploring career opportunities.
One of those interns was Joseph Markwith, a returning UEC intern and Electrical and Computer Engineering student at Oregon State University. Joseph's internship journey began while he was still in high school, and this summer marked his third year gaining hands-on experience within the cooperative.
As an Engineering Intern, Joseph supported a variety of projects related to engineering operations, data analysis, and system improvement initiatives. Through these experiences, he gained valuable exposure to the electric utility industry and a deeper understanding of how engineering supports the delivery of safe, dependable electric service.
Throughout his time at UEC, Joseph has worked alongside employees from multiple departments and has continued expanding his technical knowledge through real-world projects and mentorship opportunities.
“Being an engineering intern has given me the opportunity to apply what I have learned in the classroom to real utility projects that directly support reliable service for our communities,” Joseph said. “The experience has strengthened my technical skills and prepared me for a career in the utility industry.”
UEC's internship program provides students with meaningful opportunities to apply their education in a professional setting while gaining exposure to careers within the cooperative and utility industries. Through mentorship and hands-on experience, interns develop skills that help prepare them for future success.
We thank Joseph for his continued contributions to UEC and wish him the very best as he continues his education and prepares for a career in engineering.
