While some wildfires are caused by natural causes including lightning, about 90% are the result of human activity. Many fires start when campfires are left unattended, debris is burned improperly or cigarettes are carelessly discarded.
With Oregon’s archery elk season underway this month, hunters can help protect our forests and rangeland by taking simple fire safety precautions while recreating and spending additional time in the field:
- Never leave a campfire unattended. Fully extinguish fires by drenching them with water, then stirring the ashes until they are cold to the touch.
- Use caution with fueled lanterns, heaters and stoves. Allow them to cool before refueling, and keep flammable liquids away from heat sources.
- Dispose of cigarettes, matches and smoking materials only after they are completely out. Never toss them from vehicles or onto dry ground.
- If burning anything, follow all local rules, avoid burning during windy conditions, and keep a shovel, water and fire retardant close at hand.
If conditions change and a wildfire is nearby, evacuate immediately. Stay tuned to local emergency notifications for up-to-date instructions. We are all in this together - taking extra care in the field helps protect our homes, land and the people who call our communities home.
