Every year, electric utility members across the country lose money to scammers pretending to be from their local power company. These criminals use fear, urgency, and convincing tactics to trick people into paying fake bills or sharing personal information. At UEC, we want to help ensure your safety—both electrical and financial.

Here are some key tips to help you recognize, avoid, and report utility scams:

1. Know the Signs of a Scam

Scammers often pose as “utility representatives” demanding immediate payment to avoid service disconnection. They may call, text, email, or even show up at your door.

Look out for these red flags:

  • Threats of disconnection: “Your power will be shut off in 30 minutes if you don’t pay now.”
  • Unusual payment requests: Asking for payment via gift card, prepaid debit card, Venmo, Zelle, or cryptocurrency.
  • Caller ID spoofing: The number may appear as “Umatilla Electric” or a local number.
  • High-pressure tactics: Scammers often create a sense of urgency so you don’t have time to think.

2. How UEC Will Contact You

UEC will never demand immediate payment over the phone or ask for sensitive information like your Social Security number or credit card details.

If your account is past due, you’ll receive:

  • A mailed notice and/or official communication through your verified UEC account.
  • Options for payment through trusted UEC channels—online at umatillalelectric.com, by phone at 541-567-6414, or in person at our Hermiston headquarters or local kiosks.

3. Verify Before You Pay

If you receive a suspicious call, text, or email:

  • Hang up immediately.
  • Do not click on links or share personal information.
  • Call UEC directly using our official number listed on your bill or website to verify your account status.

4. Protect Your Information

  • Never share your UEC account number, banking info, or other personal details with anyone who contacts you unexpectedly.
  • Set up a SmartHub account online so you can track your real-time account usage and notices.
  • Keep your contact information up to date with UEC so we can reach you quickly if there’s a real issue.

5. Report Scams

If you suspect someone is trying to scam you:

Report the incident to UEC at 541-567-6414.

Contact the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) at: www.reportfraud.ftc.gov

If you’ve lost money, report it to your local law enforcement agency.
