For more than two decades, Maryann Christian has played a vital role in ensuring the financial strength and stability of Umatilla Electric Cooperative (UEC). As an accounting specialist, her meticulous attention to detail and steady dedication help keep the cooperative’s operations running smoothly behind the scenes.
Christian’s journey into accounting began early. While still in high school, she balanced classes with a job at Dairy Queen and pursued her associate degree in accounting from Blue Mountain Community College. After graduation, she joined Simplot, where she spent 15 years refining her accounting skills and developing the precision and discipline that would define her career.
In 2004, when Simplot announced plans to close its facility, Christian brought her expertise to UEC. Determined to ensure a smooth transition for Simplot, she spent nine months working days at UEC and evenings at Simplot - wrapping up responsibilities at one company while establishing her new role at another. That dedication to follow through and accountability reflects the same values she continues to bring to her work today.
Over the next several years, she advanced through a variety of accounting roles at UEC, gaining broad experience in accounts payable and general accounting before stepping into her current position as Accounting Specialist in 2011.
In this role, Christian manages key aspects of UEC’s financial operations, including payroll, account reconciliations, journal entries, and payments. Her work requires adaptability to changing payroll regulations, careful analysis, and strong organizational skills - all of which she approaches with accuracy and a calm, collaborative spirit. “Balancing the bank efforts is very rewarding - it’s like a mini party,” Christian shared with a smile. “I also really enjoy the people I work with. This department has always been great, and we’ve always been able to work together and help each other out when needed.”
Her commitment to teamwork and continuous improvement has made her a valued member of the accounting department. According to Marie Cain, manager of accounting, “Each day is brighter when Maryann is there. Her approach to all things is grounded in her personal drive to do her best - not only for her work but for others at UEC. Maryann’s experience, teamwork, and attention to detail are foundational to the success of the accounting team. She does her job with a smile and a sense of humor that’s contagious.”
For Christian, the most fulfilling part of her work comes from solving problems and maintaining balance - both in the numbers and among her colleagues. Her decades of service reflect not only technical skill but also the cooperative values of teamwork, dedication, and service.
