Accurate mapping and reliable data are essential to every decision Umatilla Electric Cooperative (UEC) makes, from system planning and engineering to daily field operations. Ensuring that information is correct, accessible, and up to date is Kyle Johnson, GIS Administrator, whose work quietly supports nearly every corner of the cooperative.

Johnson joined UEC in 2022, bringing with him a strong foundation in geographic information systems and a degree in geography. Originally from Wisconsin, he spent five years working for a local county in the GIS department straight out of college, gaining hands-on experience managing and maintaining spatial data. After relocating to the Tri-Cities, he continued his work in county GIS, for Benton County, Wash., before taking the opportunity to join UEC and apply his skills in a new environment.

In his role, Johnson oversees UEC’s day-to-day mapping operations, ensuring system data remains accurate as new lines, poles, and infrastructure are added. He works closely with engineers and collaborates across departments to support a wide range of mapping needs that are critical to both daily operations and long-term planning.

Johnson’s work extends beyond traditional mapping. He develops web-based GIS applications that allow crews and staff to access real-time information in the field. For example, when operations complete equipment inspections, Johnson creates tools that allow crews to easily submit that data on their iPads, improving efficiency and communication between outside and inside staff.

No two days look the same for Johnson. With new projects constantly emerging, he remains adaptable and flexible, balancing shifting priorities while supporting departments across the cooperative. His role requires cross-department collaboration and a willingness to step in wherever data support is needed.

“The most rewarding part of my job is knowing that my work helps others do their jobs more efficiently,” Johnson said. By providing reliable data and cleaning up information from past years, he plays a key role in improving system accuracy and strengthening UEC’s operations.

While working with historical data can present challenges, Johnson approaches each with persistence. His focus on continuous improvement helps ensure UEC’s GIS data remains dependable and ready to support future growth. Johnson’s adaptability, technical expertise, and commitment to staying current with evolving technology make him a valued member of the UEC team. His behind-the-scenes contributions help keep information flowing, decisions informed, and the cooperative moving forward.

Dustin Earls, UEC’s superintendent of engineering shared, “Beyond being exceptional at building UEC’s GIS system and associated apps, Johnson is simply a great person to work with. He doesn’t hesitate to take on challenging projects and consistently comes through. He’s a huge asset to our team.”

Kyle Johnson’s work may not always be visible, but its impact is felt every day, supporting UEC employees, operations, and the members we proudly serve.
