Metallic Balloon Causes Power Outage

July 11, 2017

A metallic party balloon caught in power lines at Geer and Theater roads knocked out power to 2,950 Umatilla Electric members Monday evening in and around north Hermiston.

Helium-filled balloons made of mylar can float into power lines, causing power outages and damaged equipment. Metallic balloons not only cause power outages, but start fires that place electrical workers and firefighters at risk. In this case, the balloon contact also started a small fire on the ground.

The outage began at 6:35 p.m. and lasted until 7:43 p.m.
